France Telecom, 100mbit broadband = $100/month

It’s sad news for us in the Western Hemisphere. While many are eagerly awaiting Verizon’s FiOS to come by, France Telecom (aka Orange) offers it’s customers 100mbit connections (both up and down) for about $100 USD a month.
Alas, the 100Mbit stops when it hits French border, but it continues quite strong outside at about 75Mbit to UK, and about 25Mbit to USA. Still faster than what I get within the US myself.
While I am still stuck on my Wild Open West (WoW) lousy 6Mbit link, here’s what guys in Paris can do:
- Download the 1.1GB full Xcode Installer in around 5 minutes
- Download a 1.5GB high-definition 1 hour long TV show in 10 minutes, it streams almost instantly.
- Host HD movies that I shoot on my server that play for my family and friends in the States
- Put all of my MP4 movies online for playing with an iPod Touch or iPhone. Also my iTunes music library is permanently online
- Download Linux distros and VMWare VMs quickly
The only reason I’d like to have this fast of a network is so I could really utilize the On-Line backup services. When you want to back up over 500GB of your photos, music and other files on-line with merely a 1Mbit up (which I get from my provider), one can’t get me even close to success.
A sad day for us, especially when Time Warner is experimenting with charging people per amount of data they download! Why isn’t anyone complaining?
